dome: the Texas Capitol Building in Austin is larger than any other State Capitol Building. It is smaller than the U.S. Capitol Building in DC, but it happens to be almost 15ft [4.57m] taller. The building was paid for with land, it is Texas after all! The 3,000,000 acres in the Texas panhandle used for payment eventually became the XIT Ranch.

warp speed: yesterday 'the storm' blew in, taking 85ºF temperatures down to 60ºF, and brought a little rain too. Today it was 49º. Right now, it's around 45º. How 'bout a 40º temperature change! I love this weather--what better time to mess with long exposures (tonight was a full moon, and a hunter's moon at that, but all I had with me was the 50mm.. so not much hope). today [october 29, 2005], I had the opportunity to go to Vidor, Texas to help cut up felled trees, primarily for elderly women who would otherwise be hopeless. It was a great experience and we had alot of fun!
This was one of our 'lumberjacks' cutting through a 35in+ diameter oak tree with one of the trusty stihl chainsaws :)

Claws of Fury: The 50mm came yesterday, and I absolutely love the lens. I got home late from a tennis tournament [I won all of my matches], so I lost my chance for a naturally lit shot, but this turned out great. I also got the D70 remote, so I can get some nice long-exposure shots in. It's Friday, Cheers!

Sand Dune Arch: I wish I could post something new, but well, I don't have anything new. If you ever visit Arches National Park in Southern Utah, this is my personal favorite. Hidden between those HUGE pieces of sandstone, you have to squeeze through a small cutting to explore the spectacle.

Its been a busy six day weekend. After Rita, there was alot of tree debris to clean up. The computer is finally situated again, and my desk is actually clean and organized now! Today I had the pleasure of mowing a huge lawn with grass that hadn't been cut in months. Almost two feet high in some places, and thick as ever (pay was good though). School is back tomorrow, and I'm busy getting all my assignments ready for tomorrow (why did my teachers assign so much when they knew we'd be so busy?!)

Edit: By the way, this from Rocky Mountain National Park (July 2005), at a nice little picnic area where we had lunch.

I've been digging through the archives, since Rita is boring me. It's rather breezy out now, and I'm enjoying the pre-hurricane weather. This may be my last post for a few days, but I'll post the next time I have electricity.

Yes, it's a parking lot. (I-45 N, from Louetta overpass)

You can see on the right, the southbound lane is open to northbound traffic, however, most of the traffic is already stuck on the left. I clicked the shutter right before the cars moved a good 20 ft. Everyone was honking their horns in approval. (I-45N from Louetta overpass, looking south)

These trucks were honking and waving at all the people taking pictures from the bridge--it's hard to see, but the Shell Station on the left was packed with people who ran out of fuel (not that the station had any!)

The residents are quite confident this will not be another Katrina. Our police force is dedicated, and we will have order. Even if the police left, us Texans know how to keep people in line.

And in case you were wondering, this is about 70miles from the coast, the main route from Houston to Dallas. Houston is estimating over 1.5 million people have evacuated (we have a hotel room in Dallas, but we are planning on staying, unless the traffic vanishes). We are really only worried about the trees, we are not in a floodplane, and our house has never flooded. But we do have 10 pine trees and a huge oak-- any of which could take out the roof. For this reason, we will be spending Friday night at the church building, or one of a number of friends' houses that don't have trees. Thanks for all your support. We will remain strong. (sorry about the gas prices in the rest of the country!)

Edit: One more shot. Notice the people pulled off the road (out of gas/ broken down) There's trash EVERYWHERE. Yuck.
